Pop-Up Chess Set

We’ve got a brand new Kickstarter campaign to share! This time, it’s a super handy pop-up chessboard created by Paper Engineer David Hawcock and his team from Infinite Jest. When you’re a fan of pop-ups (like us) you have probably already seen his work on our website and YouTube channel. David Hawcock, who also created the Davinci’s Inventions pop-up book and the pop-up scenes in Paddington 2, now designed a chessboard that has some really neat features. And you can back this project on Kickstarter right now!

Who doesn’t like chess right? It’s one of the oldest board games that still has a huge fanbase from young to old. We’ve already seen chess on electronic devices, computer games, smaller travel editions, and recently magnetic boards that have mechanisms that move the pieces automatically. But this pop-up chess set adds a new category to the list. It folds out from a flat cover into a 3D chessboard and you can stop or continue the game any time you like. Because the pieces stay in place when you fold them in, it will be ready to play the next time you open it. That’s a really nice and unique feature to have for a physical chessboard!

About the Pop-Up Chess Set

David Hawcock: Here at Infinite Jest we love chess. So, with our expertise in producing innovative beautifully made pop-up books, we got thinking about whether we could make a pop-up set. The idea was to design a truly portable set, perfect for the coffee-shop table or for travelling, small enough to tuck in a rucksack, that could fold flat and pop up in any game position – and here it is! You can truly play chess anywhere with this pop-up set. The 3D board structure means knocking pieces over is impossible – perfect for the train, car or bus… the ideal travel set!

“I always had an interest in chess. I used to play tournaments in my younger days but in recent years my interest faded a little. Life, family and making pop-ups got in the way!”

Pop-Up Chess Set

The unique thing about the design is that the board and all pieces can fold down and pop-up in any position. This, the fact that the set folds flat just like a pop-up book, and that the pieces are impossible to knock over, make it useful as a travel set – if you are changing trains you can simply close the board and then reopen and continue play later.

The Lewis chessmen Special Edition Set

David Hawcock: During my early playing days my father made me a replica set of the Isle of Lewis chess pieces from cast resin. These Viking pieces are some of the oldest pieces known discovered in northern Scotland. They are amazing and and really fire the imagination. I decided to make a second set of pop-up pieces based on this set for a special edition (the originals can be seen in the British Museum).

The Lewis chessmen, named after the island where they were found, are a group of spectacular 12th-century Viking chess pieces carved from walrus ivory. Discovered in 1831 on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, they are some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets.

The reward set is faithfully recreated in pop-up form and use the same playing board. They are possible the most iconic set of pieces in the world.

Support this project

It’s very important for projects like this to reach their goal. Without the support of backers, it would not be possible to take the next and final step to production. Support this project on Kickstarter to realize this original designed pop-up. You can pledge, starting from £12 ($16) for one Pop-Up Chess Set. It is also possible to donate a few pounds to help this project reach its £3.500 ($4.700) goal.

Great news! Another Poposition Press Kickstarter project! From master paper engineers David A. Carter and James Diaz, the sequel to their well-known The Elements of Pop Up explores advanced pop-up book techniques. A must-have for every Paper Engineer and hobbyist.

Over two decades after releasing The Elements of Pop Up, widely regarded as the best how-to book on making pop-ups, paper engineers David A. Carter and James Diaz have returned with The Complexities of Pop Up. A book packed with complex pop-up techniques and real working examples.

This interactive educational book teaches you how to take the basic pop-up structures from Elements and add complexity to them through advanced techniques. The Complexities of Pop Up also explores how paper can be engineered to use the rigidity, flexibility, and elasticity of paper to achieve spectacular results.

The Complexities of Pop Up includes over 20 working examples of advanced paper engineering techniques, essays on the qualities and history of paper, and traditional vs. laser die-cutting and printed & scored components to quickly and easily build six of the pop-ups from the book.

Published through Poposition Press, two editions of Complexities are available – the standard book as well as a special limited edition signed by both David A. Carter and James Diaz. The special edition comes in a gold foil stamped book and slipcase and is limited to only 100 copies.

The Complexities of Pop Up is currently available on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/34nkkTr

Update: This project was backed within 24 hours and now unlocked two stretch goals which means each copy of Complexities will now include pre-cut pieces for all 22 of the pop-ups in the book!

We would agree if someone would say that Matthew Reinhart can be considered as “the Rembrandt” amongst Paper Engineers. He keeps creating masterpiece after masterpiece. And recently, a brand new title popped-up in the Amazon store with the title The World of Warcraft Pop-Up Book, created by… Paper Engineer Matthew Reinhardt. We’re not sure if this is some far relative of Matthew Reinhart, who shares the same engineering genes and has a last name that has similarities with Rembrandt. It’s also plausible that this is just a typo. Even though the first explanation would be much more surprising, we’re almost certain that this is another new pop-up book created by Matthew Reinhart and we can’t wait for it!

“Prepare for an astonishing vision of the world of Azeroth like you’ve never seen before! Built by best-selling paper engineer Matthew Reinhardt”

So what do we know so far? Not much really. The Amazon description tells that it will contain a map of Azeroth. This can be created by unfolding each individual spread. Sounds familiar right? We have already seen this format in Matthew Reinhart’s Game of Thrones and Harry Potter pop-up books.

The Amazon page shows beautiful and detailed cover artwork that looks like a temporary concept. As you may have noticed there are no credits mentioned and there’s very little information. Basically, it’s just the title. It won’t take long for this image to be replaced with the final cover artwork. But we really wanted to see how this artwork would look like on a pop-up book so we have made this mock-up of the cover artwork placed on the Game of Thrones pop-up book.

Update: New cover artwork has recently been added to the Amazon page. Below on the right the first version and on the left, the latest version of the cover artwork.

Before we jump into conclusions, we have to warn you that this new title is so fresh, there’s a lot we don’t know and a lot we wish for. Looking at the specs of this new pop-up book, you’ll see that it weighs 1.7 pounds and that’s a lot less compared to the Game of Thrones and Harry Potter books that both weigh 2.6 pounds. The price of this book shows that it’s a more advanced pop-up title but that’s still no indication of how big it will be. And like the cover artwork, the specs can also change over time. So it looks like we will have to wait for more information about this World of Warcraft pop-up book. Make sure to follow our social media channels for news and check back to this article for updates. We will add more information as soon as we know more!

Make sure to check our updated list of upcoming pop-up books. 2019 is going to be a great pop-up year!

Amazon description:

Choose your faction, pick your weapon, and prepare for an astonishing vision of the world of Azeroth like you’ve never seen before! Built by best-selling paper engineer Matthew Reinhardt, the World of Warcraft Pop-Up Book brings the bemost well-loved locations of Warcraft to life, from the classic faction hubs of Orgrimmar and Stormwind, to the battle-scarred lands of Lordaeron and Teldrassil, and even the new capital cities of Kul Tiras and Zandalar! Each page unfolds into an eye-popping treat, showing depicting iconic locations sites in with brand-new art and interactive pieces ways that you’ve never seen before. Unfold each individual spread to form a map of Azeroth!

What you see above is a photo of the Game of Thrones pop-up book, unfolded into the map of Westeros. We don’t think it’s going to exactly like this but it may be close.

It was a very exciting week for pop-up book collectors, Paper Engineers and especially members of the Movable Book Society. Yesterday, the Movable Book Society announced the 2018 Meggendorfer Prize winners in three categories: Emerging Paper Engineer, Best Paper Engineering Artist and Best Paper Engineering for a Trade Publication. Pop-up and movable enthusiasts from all over the world gathered last weekend in Kansas City to witness the announcement of this years Meggendorfer Prize winners. So let’s talk about the winners of the Meggendorfer prizes!

Meggendorfer Prize winner: Trade Publication

The winner of the 2018 Meggendorfer prize in the category Trade Publication is Simon Arizpe with his huge and amazing pop-up title Zahhak: The Legend Of The Serpent King. We haven’t reviewed this beautiful pop-up book yet but from what we’ve seen, this pop-up book is something different and it looks very impressive. The story of Zahhak is a retelling of the myth about the misguided Prince Zahhak who is easily swayed by the devil to murder his father and usurp the throne. Zahhak contains artwork created by New York-based Iranian filmmaker and graphic artist Hamid Rahmanian. The combination of both the Paper Engineering and artwork make this pop-up title a true cultural manifest.

We have to wait for just a while before our copy of the Zahhak pop-up book arrives. There will be a full review anytime soon but the video above is just as great and the perfect introduction of this huge masterpiece!

Finalists for the category Trade Publication

You may already know some titles from this list but as you can see, the competition was very hard. In case you’re interested you can check out some of these amazing books in our previous reviews or order them online by clicking the Amazon link. Be warned!!! This might be your new wish list for your pop-up book collection!

What would be the best way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Movable Book Society? Earlier this year, the MBS launched a brand new website, a new logo and there’s a conference coming up this September that will also celebrate this special occasion. But it gets even better! The MBS organized a pop-up contest among the most talented Paper Engineers from around the World.

The assignment for this competition was to design a specific letter from the alphabet and a jury eventually selected 26 winning designs that form the complete alphabet. The outcome is a beautiful limited edition box set that includes 26 individual pop-up cards. Needless to say that this is a must-have for pop-up collectors. It’s also the perfect introduction for those who want to discover more about the art of Paper Engineering and the work of all the talented Paper Engineers who contributed to this one-of-a-kind Anniversary project.

“A to Z celebrates the 25th anniversary of The MBS, a forum for artists, collectors, librarians and others who love, create, share and study pop-up books.”

We think that an alphabet is a great choice for a subject! Not just because it gives room for 26 different Paper Engineers to display their work, but also because pop-up books about the alphabet are the most surprising when it comes to finding different engineering solutions to form a letter. Some examples of these are ABC3D by Marion Bataille, Aa-Zz by David Hawcock and the newly released Pop-up ABC by Courtney Watson McCarthy. Imagine how full of surprises this box set will be, because of all the different Paper Engineers who are represented. We’ve already seen some sneak peeks shared on social media but in case you’ve missed it, here’s a brief selection of what to expect.

Pre-order now!

The A to Z: Marvels in Paper Engineering box set is available to pre-order on the Movable Book Society’s website! Release date: September 27, 2018.

All pop-up cards are housed in a custom clamshell box designed by Paper Engineer Isabel Uria. It also includes a bonus pop-up card engineered by Bruce Foster and features a brief history of The Movable Book Society written by MBS founder Ann Montanaro Staples.

Meggendorfer contenders video compilation

Below you’ll find a video with a compilation of all Meggendorfer contenders for the 2018 Artist Book Prize.

About The Movable Book Society

The Movable Book Society was established in 1993, when Bill Clinton was president of the United States, Beanie Babies were introduced and Rutgers University librarian Ann R. Montanaro published Pop-up and Movable Books: A Bibliography. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from collectors who purchased the book convinced her that there was abundant interest in the topic to form an organization of collectors, and thus she founded The Movable Book Society.

We’re counting the days until two of Matthew Reinhart’s new pop-up titles are available. We already shared the new cover artwork and a mock-up of the upcoming Harry Potter: A Pop-Up Guide to Hogwarts. And last week, new cover artwork of Tim Burton’s the Nightmare before Christmas pop-up book was added to the Amazon store. So just like we did with the Harry Potter book, we also made a mock-up of this new pop-up title and it looks beautiful! We’ve asked Matthew Reinhart to share more about his upcoming pop-up books and like you’ll see, it’s going to be something to look forward to!

In the gallery above, from left to right: A shot with Sally in the foreground, the Mayor and Jack. In the middle a short clip of a pull-tab scene with a tall Jack who rises out of the spread. And on the right of this gallery, you can see a concept of an advent calendar that also will be released this year! The combination of Matthew Reinhart’s beautiful illustration style and stunning paper engineering is a joy to look at. Based on the images above, we think that this book is going to be mostly black!

“Experience Tim Burton’s iconic film like never before with this nightmarish pop-up of monstrous proportions!”

Last week, Matthew already revealed a part of the cover and we just discovered that high-resolution artwork of the complete cover is added to the Amazon product page! We couldn’t resist to also make a mock-up of The Nightmare Before Christmas Pop-Up book that will be released this fall.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Pop-Up

And then this happened: A couple of days after our post about the cover mock-up, the image got pulled of Amazon and was replaced by new artwork with a brighter background and a slightly different illustration in the center of the layout. Both versions look beautiful and we will have to wait until the release day to see what the final version will be.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Pop-Up

Amazon description:

Experience Tim Burton’s iconic film like never before with this nightmarish pop-up of monstrous proportions! From the renowned paper engineer Matthew Reinhart comes a mind-blowing retelling of this classic story in gravity-defying pop-up artwork on every page. A celebration marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the groundbreaking movie, this is the perfect item for avid The Nightmare Before Christmas fans, holiday ghouls, and undead merrymakers alike.

MR-tombstone

Did you notice the tombstone at the bottom of the cover? How about that for a cool book credit! If you’re a fan like us, and you’re familiar with the dark humor of Tim Burton, you wouldn’t be surprised. But still, it’s one of the coolest book credits we’ve ever seen on a cover.

Harry Potter Pop-Up

And there’s also more to share about the upcoming Harry Potter pop-up Book! The images above are screenshots of die-lines in a nesting sheet that looks like a jigsaw puzzle. This nesting sheet is filled with Kevin M. Wilson’s artwork of Harry and Hermione. When cut-out, these parts will finally form the pop-ups.

If you follow Matthew Reinhart on his Facebook or Instagram, you know you’re in for some good treats. This week Matthew shared some Jelly Beans and a sneak peek video of a white dummy of the Hogwarts Castle spread that will be part of a giant unfoldable map. Just like the amazing Game of Thrones: A Pop-up Guide to Westeros, this new Harry Potter pop-up book will be a combination of a book and 3D map with great proportions. Click here to read more about how this will work. The white dummy already looks very detailed, even without the artwork!
