In this second edition of our Social Media Round-up we have some great pictures to share from the Movable Book Society Conference that took place in Boston this year. Talented paper engineers from all over the world came to show and demonstrate their latest projects and publications. We’ve also found some new works on twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Instagram. The Gingerbread White House
Next week on September 27, Chuck Fischer’s newest pop-up title The Gingerbread White House will be released. You can already pre-order it at Amazon. Chuck Fisher announced his new pop-up book on his FaceBook page by sharing some first images that look very promising! For those who love Christmas, this book looks like a real treat for the holidays. For the few lucky early birds, Chuck held a signing at the National Book Festival in Washington DC this weekend.
Winner Artist Edition What a Mess!
There was a lottery for subscribers to the 5:00am pop-up book newsletter. Randy Naleimaile is the lucky winner of the 1-of-a-kind pop-up artist edition of What a Mess! A beautiful handmade cyan edition of Keith Allen’s Kickstarter project (go fund it!). Congratulations Randy!
TRAID Pop-up Special edition slipcase
Poposition press shared a sample shot of the acrylic slipcase for the Triad special edition. All 60 icons, that are designed by Junko Mizuno for this pop-up book, will be different. This exclusive slipcase is also available as an add-on for Standard editions. Click here to pre-order TRAID.
Gold for Disney Princess
The Disney Princess pop-up book by Matthew Reinhart has won the Gold Benjamin Franklin Award for best cover Design in the category Children’s and Young Adult. “With state-of-the-art paper engineering and beautifully rendered illustrations, Disney Princess: A Magical Pop-up world brings these castles and characters brilliantly to life.” Via @InsightEditions.
Sneak peek behind the scenes
Jamie Baker from Disney Publishing shared a sneak peek behind the scenes with Matthew Reinhart at the Disney Frozen pop-up book video shoot. We have no idea what to expect but we look forward to this behind the scenes special and share a link as soon as we know it’s online. Also, stay tuned for our upcoming video review of Disney Frozen! Creatures of the Deep
On this photo, taken at the Movable Book Society by Isabel Uria (@isabel_uria), we see one of the pop-up spreads from the upcoming Creatures of the Deep pop-up book created by paper engineer Maike Biederstädt. This was the first presentation of her pop-up book that will be released in November this year.
Hokusai Pop-Ups
A photo taken by Poposition Press (@popositionpress) who also attended the Movable Book Society. This pop-up spread, called The Great Wave Off Kanagawa comes from the upcoming Hokusai pop-up book by Courtney Watson McCarthy who also created the Dali, Escher and Gaudi pop-up books.
Zahhak: The Legend of the Serpent King
Another great post from Isabel Uria (@isabel_uria) at the Movable Book Society. Shown here is a pop-up spread from Simon Arizpe’s upcoming Zahhak: The Legend of the Serpent King pop-up book. As you can see this book has many pages and is filled with ingeniously crafted spreads and complex constructions.
Freedom, a Fable Pop-Up Book
Pop-up book designer Simon Arizpe (@simon.arizpe) posted a picture of Kara Walker’s (@kara_walker_official) Freedom pop-up book shown at the Movable Book Society. Freedom, a Fable is an illustrated artist’s book with beautiful, laser-cut pop-up silhouettes, designed with black and white paper only.
Frozen Pop-Up Book signing
On September 10, Matthew Reinhart (@matthewcreinhart) celebrated the release of his new Frozen pop-up book at the Disneyland Resort. Guests were able to meet him and get their brand-new copy of Frozen personally signed. Matthew also took a visit at the World of Disney Store later that day.
Midnight Creatures
A proud Helen Friel (@helenfriel) showing us her brand-new Midnight Creatures shadow pop-up book, published by Laurence King Publishing (@laurencekingpub). By shining a flashlight on the pages, all sorts of wild animals appear as shadows in the background. Stay tuned for our video review later this weekend!

The work of Colette Fu
Paper engineer Colette Fu shared this video of a pop-up two weeks ago on her Youtube channel. Colette makes beautiful pop-up’s from photo’s. Her work is very impressive and we thought you might be interested in her work. We’ve seen all kinds of pop-ups but the combination of real people’s portraits in pop-up’s that pop-out and animate is refreshing! You can also follow Colette Fu on Facebook.
