Where does Santa live? How does he know what you want for Christmas and where do all the toys come from? How Santa Really Works not only gives answers to these questions, it also takes the reader on a journey trough the World of Santa Claus and shares all the secrets you always wanted to know. Snowy landscapes, the Letters Department, Santa’s workshop, lots of Elves and a spectacular Christmas party for Santa’s workers, it’s all in this fabulous pop-up edition of How Santa Really Works.

“Have you ever wondered how Santa knows exactly what you want for Christmas?”

This beautiful Christmas pop-up book already is a collectable classic. How Santa Really Works is out of print for a while and we would love to see it back in the market one day. This pop-up edition was published back in 2010 by Simon & Schuster and as we speak last copies are getting sold. This makes it a lot more difficult to get one for a fair price but it’s all worth it, especially for a pop-up book collector.

How Santa Really Works Pop-Up Book

Artwork

The illustrations by Alan Snow literally jump of every page together with the pop-ups. The rich and colorful artwork is a joy to look at. And just like the original, this book also contains a lot of humor and jokes what makes it a fun read. The amount of details is stunning and there’s so much going on, you just can’t get your eyes of it. Every single piece of paper in this book is printed on both sides what makes the pop-up spreads in this book even more interesting to look at from different angles. Alan Snow did a great job merging and expanding the orignal artwork into three dimensional pop-up scenes. It really works!

Storytelling

We don’t know which came first; the artwork or the story? We can be sure about one thing, it all fits together perfectly. The text makes it more fun to study the illustrations and vice versa. Alan Snow’s vision of Santa’s World is a amusing and a fun read, even for adults. The story of How Santa Really Works brings everyone in the mood for Christmas. Our favorite is the Letters Department spread. It’s the most simple pop-up spread in this book but the handwritten letters steal your heart right away. The most adorable stories are hidden behind tiny lift-the-flap postcards who are addressed to Santa Claus.

Paper engineering

The paper engineering by Maggie Bateson is solid, straight forward and almost feels like it’s inspired on the work of classic Paper Engineers like Vojtěch Kubašta. There even are some movable parts what also makes it more fun and interactive. Every pop-up spread is sturdy and pops-in and out with ease. The strong paper that is used for the pop-ups also contributes to the total strength of the pop-ups. All together this pop-up book really is “kid proof” and pop-ups won’t tear that easy.

In the Arctic, all the animals are getting ready for Christmas. There are some drifting friends on their way for a Christmas visit and a cup of hot tundra tea. So everybody helps decorating the place and is getting ready just on time to welcome the visiting penguins with a tree-trimming party and a show of stars and Northern Lights to enjoy together.

Arctic Christmas is a new publication by Jumping Jack Press and one of the latest pop-up titles engineered by Yevgeniya Yeretskaya. We love the work of Yevgeniya! She created a lot of Holiday pop-up titles and is known for her surprising and original way of working with pop-ups. We already reviewed and captured two of our favorites: Snowflakes and The Snow Queen. Both books are beautiful winter themed pop-up books by Yevgeniya that she not only engineered but also illustrated.

Arctic Christmas is a very lovely and adorable Christmas pop-up book for kids but also for an adult, it’s hard to resist all that cuteness. The story is in rhyme and combined with the illustrations, this book is a jolly and cheerful Christmas pop-up that every kid will love. It contains seven solid pop-up spreads and some of them have pull tabs for animation and interaction between the reader and the characters. Arctic Christmas definitely is a very cool pop-up book!

Yevgeniya Yeretskaya about Arctic Christmas

We’ve asked Yevgeniya how she and her team came up with the idea to create Arctic Christmas and if she could tell us more about the process  of creating this pop-up book with her team.

Yevgeniya Yeretskaya:
The idea to make the Arctic Christmas book came about because of a panoramic greeting card, designed for the holiday season at Up With Paper. All of us on the Up With Paper team liked this card very much and agreed that we would like to create a holiday story around all these sweet animals in an Arctic setting as they’re getting ready for Christmas. Of course, penguins live nowhere near the Arctic, which is why it was decided that they would be coming up from Antarctica to visit their friends up North!

Pippa Curnick, the illustrator who created the original art for the card, was asked whether she would like to work on another book with us. To our delight she agreed! This is Pippa’s third book title with Jumping Jack Press – a publishing division of Up With Paper. Her previous illustrated titles with us include The Mitten and Santa’s Tree, which is the 2016 Silver Medal Winner for Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards Book Arts/Pop-Up/Cut-Out!!

Next, we reached out to Janet Lawler, an author of children’s books we have also worked with before. We thought that her writing style would be perfect for this title, as it was for Santa’s Tree the year before. She agreed as well and put together a story in verse, adding really great details that would later be translated into artwork. It was such a pleasure to be working with her again!

Once her work was done, I took Janet’s text, broke it up into sections and sketched/storyboarded the book. As I did this, I also noted ideas for the mechanics and their elements, for paper layering and adding details to illustrations, all which would be included on each spread, along with placement of the text.

After the storyboards were approved, I sent those sketches to Pippa to turn into finished artwork. Illustrating for pop-ups can be tricky, because the art gets taken apart and then put together again in a thee-dimensional configuration. It is like breaking and putting “Humpty-Dumpty” together again, and again, and again! Since I had worked with Pippa on the two previous titles, she understood what I needed as far as “layering” of art, painting different animals, objects and backgrounds separately, and adding extra details where requested: for instance, the Hares! They serve tea on spread #4 and their bodies were painted separately from their arms because they were parts of moving push-pull mechanics.

“Designing and putting together pop-up books makes me really happy!”

Yevgeniya Yeretskaya

At this point I was conceptualizing and art-directing, but I was not yet selected as the paper engineer for this book. When the first illustrations came in, our VP/Creative Director Monika Brandrup asked if I would like to engineer it. I said: “Of course!” and then did a little dance, because designing and putting together pop-up books makes me really happy!!

Engineering after that was pretty seamless because all of the parts were already painted to my specifications. I had everything needed to play with the mechanics and bring the story into a multi-dimensional realm! It was just a matter of time and focus–and also giving unfinished spreads to all the kids I knew to see if the paper mechanics would survive the handling.

I am so happy you think that Arctic Christmas is a wonderful book! I certainly enjoyed working on it! Seeing how it has evolved from the greeting card that it was based on, with fun verse and subtle humor in it’s content, and with sweet little added details in the illustrations, has been the most interesting part of this project. Every one of us put our own spin on what we thought this book should be like, and I think by almost alchemical process, it transformed into something very different, but wonderfully so!

“Long ago in the town of Bethlehem, a child was born on a bright and starry night.” In this review we will take a closer look at Robert Sabuda’s latest Christmas pop-up title: The Christmas Story. A beautiful pop-up book about the birth of Jesus Christ shown in a decor of white pop-ups combined with gold and pearlescent details. Sabuda’s last Christmas pop-up title Winter’s Tale, was published in 2005 and this new Christmas pop-up title is something that we as collectors all looked forward to. The Christmas Story is an even bigger pop-up book and has the same style and white paper-cut pop-up designs like we’ve seen before in Robert Sabuda’s other Christmas pop-up books.

A great match for a classic

The Christmas Story is a pop-up book that already feels like a classic pop-up title. Sabuda’s “plain white style” combined with a classic story like The First Christmas is a great match. The details of the characters and cut-outs are beautiful and subtle. For those who are a fan Sabuda’s angel pop-up designs, this book features even more detailed and beautiful angels! The size of the book which is a bit bigger than Winter in White and The 12 Days of Christmas and contains 6 main large pop-up spreads. Every spread is decorated with gold and pearlescent foil that contributes to the luxury look and feel of this book.

Paper Engineering

Robert Sabuda’s very first pop-up book, the classic and collectable Christmas Alphabet, was the start of a popular series of Christmas pop-up books that all have in common that there’s no artwork used but only plain (mostly white) paper. This pure way of paper engineering uses no “graphic tricks” and is based on shapes, contours and pop-up structure. A very effective and honest way to display the art and complexity of paper engineering without using graphics or artwork.

The Christmas Story pop-up book Robert Sabuda The Christmas Story pop-up book Robert Sabuda The Christmas Story pop-up book Robert Sabuda The Christmas Story pop-up book Robert Sabuda

Every page in this book uses it’s own technique and is amazing in a different way. For example the star that rises up above the three wise men. It’s a rotating star that uses the same technique as we have already seen in the shape of a tornado in Sabuda’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Or the way the stable folds out and sets every character in place, including the characters inside the stable. Most pop-ups are big, detailed and solid and contain lots of layers to build the scene and characters. All those layers fold in-and-out with ease and feel like a strong structure. There also are a lot of pulling mechanics hidden underneath the pages that pull elements into place.

We are very excited about this new Christmas title by Robert Sabuda! We did our best to capture the beauty of this pop-up book but like most pop-up books, the best way to experience it is by holding the book yourself!

Who doesn’t know the story of Disney’s Frozen? The song Let it Go, Elsa and Anna, jolly snowman Olaf and the beautiful world of snow, ice palaces and winter landscapes of the Arendelle kingdom. The story of Frozen is now available as a luxury pop-up book created by Paper Engineer and artist Matthew Reinhart. Frozen: A Pop-Up Adventure contains nearly 20 pop-up’s and some surprising pull tab transformations of pop-ups and scenes. The very first winter pop-up title created by Matthew Reinhart and it’s everything we hoped for.

The first thing we’ve noticed about this book was the use of complex engineering techniques that make the pop-up’s more impressive but also flat and solid. Double layered pop-ups that fold in-and-out smoothly and scene’s that unfold from totally flat into a huge decor of paper. A spectacle of paper animation to behold and it’s all happening in front of your eyes.

frozen pop-up book frozen pop-up book frozen pop-up book frozen pop-up book frozen pop-up book frozen pop-up book

Artwork

Winter has never been so colorful! Matthew Reinhart, who already created the beautiful pop-up title Disney Princess A Magical Pop-Up World, translated Disney’s Frozen into a magnificent and colorful winter pop-up book. Every page is a mix of fantastic artwork, holographic prints and advanced paper engineering. The artwork, also created by Matthew Reinhart, is a pleasant mix of Matthew’s typical style of hand painted textures and the almost contrasting digital world of the Frozen movie. It feels and looks like Disney with a crafty edge of Reinhart’s style. Something that really works, especially combined with pop-ups.

Plots and surprises

The use of pull tabs contributes to the storytelling and reveals story plots and surprises. The last spread is a huge stage that transforms the scene into a totally different pop-up. It feels solid and contains a lot of layers that create extra depth. The smaller pull tabs, that are used with mini pop-ups, also work smooth and make this book extra interactive. There’s a lot going on and the way the story unfolds makes this book a very nice read for young and old.

Interview Matthew Reinhart

We’ve asked Matthew Reinhart some questions about his new Frozen pop-up book. In this interview Matthew also shared some new details about the upcoming Mickey Mouse and Pixar pop-up books and he revealed another Disney title for 2018 that we can’t wait to get our hands on!

BPUB – Congratulations with this wonderful new Disney pop-up title and also with your upcoming Disney books like Mickey Mouse and Pixar. You must be honored to make all these Disney titles?
MR – How could I not be honored? Disney artists have been teaching and inspiring me since seeing my very first Disney animated film before I can even remember. I feel like I continue learning now that I’m collaborating with Disney today.

BPUB – Your new books are getting more and more advanced and complicated without making the pop-up pages more bulky. How do you accomplish that?
MR – These days I’m not allowed to cram as many small pop-ups into a book as I used to! Sometimes I’d stack secondary side pops on top of each other, adding significant thickness to a book. I’ve also learned over the years to move mechanisms around to offset bulking, as well some manufacturers prefer paper stocks that isn’t as thick as previous stocks, which is fine by me as long as the mechanisms work well.

BPUB – The technique you use for the pull pop-ups that transform, it looks like you’re exploring the possibilities of this technique?
MR – Truth be told, pull-tab pops actually let me sneak in an extra large pop-up when I’m only allowed a certain number of pops!

“With time and a whole lot of paper, I eventually got to a pop that not only unfurled a good height, but also expanded into a massive structure on the base page.”

Matthew Reinhart

BPUB – Talking about engineering techniques, the way Elsa’s Ice castle folds in-and-out looks almost mechanic and it’s very solid. Can you tell us something about how you create a complex pop-up like this?
MR – Elsa’s Ice Castle pop-up began life as a design for a cancelled fairy tale book from about 5 years ago. I remember reworking the design for weeks, because I wanted the structure to arise differently than other castle pop-ups I’ve created. The first designs created a castle that looked almost like a monster’s maw rather than the soaring graceful structure I’d envisioned.  With time and a whole lot of paper, I eventually got to a pop that not only unfurled a good height, but also expanded into a massive structure on the base page. There was even space inside the castle – too bad Elsa wanted so much time to herself!

BPUB – You make all the artwork and illustrations for the Disney books yourself. How is it to work with Disney as a paper engineer and an illustrator?
MR – The working relationship is quite easy, actually, because my primary editor is a very good friend of mine! She’s very frank with me and never shy about giving me criticism. The toughest part for me is making my deadlines – I’m always behind schedule! Making all aspects of a pop-up book is quite a laborious endeavor.

BPUB – The artwork for Frozen has the same look and feel as the (digital) animated movie but still has that artistic look with hand painted textures. Was it hard to combine those two worlds?
MR – It was very hard! I started doing my typical cut-paper collage styled artwork digitally instead of cut by hand a couple years ago, and the artwork for Frozen Pop-up was created that way. So many layers of handmade papers scanned in and cut up in the computer. It’s very important to stay ‘on model’ with Disney characters, especially for two popular princesses like Elsa and Anna! Disney Publishing, however, loves to let their illustrators interpret stories with their own flair.

BPUB – This is your first real winter themed pop-up book. We would love to see a Christmas pop-up book by Reinhart. Do you already have any plans for a Christmas pop-up book?
MR – You know, I’ve toyed with doing my own pop-up renditions of a classic holiday stories, but to be honest, somebody else already done it better. That said, I do have a different sort of Christmas title in the works for Fall 2018… but with a monstrous twist – Tim Burton’s beloved Nightmare Before Christmas! I cannot WAIT to get to work on it.

BPUB – We would like to know some more about your upcoming Disney Pixar and Mickey Mouse books. Is there anything you can share with us already?
MR – Right now, I’m working on a big Pixar Pop-Up Celebration, and as usual, I am behind! With the help of several Pixar producers, directors and their amazing publishing team, iconic scenes from all 19 Pixar movies (including 2 that haven’t even released yet) were chosen to make pop! There’s even a little Pixar history thrown in for good measure, too. Everyone at Pixar has been wonderful to collaborate with and I hope I can make something that lives up to their magic. As for a forthcoming pop-up retrospective about the most famous mouse in the world, what can I say? The mere thought gives me goosebumps!

Thank you Matthew for this interview! As always, we look forward to your new books!
